Help: Population Density Tool for UK SORA
This tool helps you calculate the average population density within a defined area, specifically for assessing Ground Risk Class (GRC) as part of a UK Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
How to Use:
Define Your Area: Use the polygon drawing tool () or import a geometry file (GeoJSON, KML, WKT) to define the precise boundary of your calculated ground risk buffer. For drawing, click to place vertices, and double-click the first point or click the finish action to complete the shape. It is recommended to first determine the appropriate ground risk buffer geometry using external tools like the DFS Drone User Platform Map Tool before drawing or importing it here.
Calculation: Once the polygon is complete (either drawn or imported), the tool automatically calculates:
The total area (km²).
The estimated total population within that area (based on intersecting ONS Output Areas).
The area-weighted average population density (people per km²).
Results & Editing: The calculated values appear in the sidebar under 'Analysis Results'. You can edit the polygon vertices directly on the map using the edit tool () or by modifying the coordinates in the 'Edit Vertices' table. The results update automatically after edits.
Export: Click the 'Export PDF Report' button to generate a document containing the map view, results, coordinates, and methodology.
Ensure the polygon accurately represents the ground risk buffer relevant to your drone operation as defined in your SORA application.
